What we do here at JAARS

It's about time we show you all what we do here at JAARS. You've seen pictures of the area, but we want to give you a little insider-look at what each of us does. Enjoy!
IN THE HANGAR
Jason has had many opportunities to do various projects in the hangar, such as: tire changes, riveting, structural repairs on King Airs, fabricating parts out of sheet metal, electrical work, painting, fabric covering, fiberglass work and aircraft inspections.
This is a picture of rivets that are used to hold airplanes together. The majority of the sheetmetal work Jason does involves riveting.

Jason will be overhauling one of these engines in the engine shop soon.

These are a few parts that are made at JAARS (minus the crankshaft, for those of you who know what that is) :)

Here is a portion of the engine shop.

These are some Helio Courier ailerons that Jason has prepped for painting.

This is Jason's co-intern, David.

This is a Helio Courier rudder that was shipped from Sentani, Indonesia to the JAARS Center to have damage repaired. Jason took it completely apart and is currently rebuilding it.

There used to be two patches that were riveted right onto the outside of this plane. Jason drilled out those old rivets and made new patches that are flush with the rest of the plane.

IN THE KITCHEN:

Keri spends four mornings a week in the kitchen helping to prepare the noon meal. She has made some really sweet friends. A typical day starts with preparing the salad bar (restocking items and putting them in new clean containers), then making the daily side salad to go with the hot meal, then helping the baker (make rolls, pie crusts, cut desserts, etc.). She leaves just before noon to pick up Patrick from "school" then they come back together to have lunch at the cafeteria and usually meet new people who sit at the table with them.

This is the baking area...Carol is one of the volunteer bakers.

Here is the soup area with Elsa, Sarah (Keri's "boss") and Dee. The green containers on the bottom right are the salad bar containers that get filled/changed out each morning.

The counter against the back wall in this picture is Keri's "work station."

AT THE "MK STATION"

Patrick spends four mornings a week at "school," as we call it. He absolutely loves it there! He has two regular teachers--Ms. Beth and Ms. Ila--but also has other volunteer teachers come in from time to time. Some days he is the only one in his class and other times there are a couple other children there--but he gets a lot of one on one attention. They go for walks, play outside, do crafts, sing songs, read books, eat snack and have lots of free play time.

Too hot--and it's not even summer!

This just will not do! According to whatever weather website I was reading, it is currently "officially" 87 degrees in Waxhaw....it's only 80 in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea! How can NC be hotter than PNG?!?! And it's only 73 in Albertville--I'm so excited to go home in 8 days!

Memorial Day Weekend

We spent Saturday of this particular weekend moaning about having nothing to do and nowhere to go. Then we got the bright idea to go on another exploration of North Carolina. So, we found the only campground in the whole state with a site left for this camping-holiday weekend and went there on Sunday. The NC Zoological Center is 2 hours from our apartment, and the campground we found is across the street from the zoo. Perfect! What was even better is that since we are MN Zoo members, we could get into this zoo for free--we went on Sunday and Monday! It was a nice easy way to be the boredom and visit Asheboro, NC.

At the Zoo:

It's like looking in a mirror!

We went all that way to the zoo and guess what we saw the most of?? Geese! We can see geese anywhere--including our own parking lot, but Patrick sure enjoyed them.

On day 2, after two full days of exploring and camping, Patrick finally had had enough. We didn't think it could be done, but Jason we exhausted the little guy! Of course, by Tuesday he was back up to speed--it's taken us all week to recover!

Miscellaneous

Here are some random Patrick pictures from fairly recent...afterall, what else would we take pictures of?? And what other pictures would you want to see?!
Look what Patrick's doing! And reading an airplane magazine while he does it!

Taking Flight

Jason has been renting a Piper Arrow from a small airport nearby to keep current and continue practicing for the evaluation in October. He has brought Keri & Patrick on his adventures as well. As you can tell, he probably wouldn't even be able to fly the plane without his one-and-a-half year old co-pilot!!

Look who's in the left seat!

Ultimately, Patrick does get put in the back for the actual flying. No complaining about it though---he sits back there and squeals!

Mini Vacation

We made a little trip "out east" two weekends ago. Now you might be wondering how we can get any more east than this, but it is possible...we went clear to the ocean! It was Patrick's first time at the Atlantic and he didn't seem to impressed. He enjoyed the sand and shells, but the waves were a bit much. First we drove to Raleigh so Keri could see the capitol building and grounds and add another capitol to her scrapbook. Then we drove to the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills, NC and spent the rest of the day at the beach. We decided to make the 7 hour drive back to Waxhaw that night...not too bad after driving nearly 30 to get here!

More NC Wildlife

No rod, no reel, no problem...Jason just reaches right in with his hands while we're feeding the fish, flings them up onto land and catches them!! It's not quite enough to feed the family, but wildly entertaining at least!

Crystal Lake (on JAARS Center) is full of fish and turtles...we even saw some crayfish and have seen one snake swimming in there! If you look past the turtle in this picture, you can see a whole bunch of fish waiting for bread.

The Canadian Geese here don't seem to know that they're supposed to be in water, not on the roof of a building!

EEEW!

Fire Ants are miserable...they hurt and are all over the place down here. We miss the nice, innocent Minnesota black ants...

Patrick's First Bike!

After much debate, we finally decided on a nice little 12" Huffy for Patrick and a plain red helmet for him to put airplane stickers on. As you can see, he loves the bike and not the helmet (unless his puppy, Barf, his teddy, Ta-ba, or his daddy is wearing it!).

So much company!

After throwing a huge fit while Grandma & Grandpa were here, Patrick ran into the living room and fell right into the coffee table!
